Configuring the dictionary entry layout only affects the look of the entry when published in Lexonomy. The Lexonomy presentation module (or viewer) will be used to display the entry. If the dictionary data are exported from Lexonomy, the layout will not be preserved. The layout will be controlled by the environment in which the exported dictionary will be published.
Layout basics
Each layout consists of containers, groups and elements. Elements refer to entry elements as defined in the entry structure. Groups refer to a group of elements within the same level of hierarchy (a parent with its children). A container is used to organize elements, groups and other containers into one block.
Groups and containers can use vertical or horizontal placement of the items they contain. Elements do not have this setting.
This image shows a container. The container users horizontal placement. The container contains the pos element and a group of elements called pronunciation group. The pronunciation group contains the pronunciation, transcription and label elements. The group also users horizontal placement. Horizontal placement puts elements and groups next to each other, on the same line. Vertical placement would put them one under the other.
And this is one option showing how it can be styled and presented to the user. The pronunciation element contains a link to an audio file and this is why it is styled as a clickable icon rather than showing the actual URL. Font colours, sizes, backgrounds and borders can be set for each element separately but also for the whole group or container. Here a background and rounded corners are set for the pos element and a border is set for the whole pronunciation group.
Layout types
Four layouts can be configured. The procedure of configuring the layouts is identical for all of them.
desktop compulsory
The desktop layout is the default layout. If no other layout is configured, it will also be used as the tablet, mobile and PDF layout. The desktop layout is responsive. It will adjust to smaller screens. The other layouts are only needed if some elements should be hidden or the layout should be very different on smaller screens.
tablet optional
This layout defines how entries are displayed on screens smaller than a desktop and larger than a mobile. If the tablet layout is not defined, the desktop layout is used instead.
mobile optional
The mobile layout defines how entries are displayed on mobile phones. If the mobile layout is not defined, the tablet layout is used instead. If the tablet layout is not defined either, the desktop layout will be used.
PDF optional
This layout defines how entries will look when exported to PDF. If the PDF layout is not defined, the desktop layout is used instead.
